Italy and France agree that the warring sides in the battle for Tripoli must swiftly reach a truce, foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said on Friday after talks with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian. At least 213 people have died including dozens of civilians and 1,009 have been injured in clashes in Tripoli over the past 14 days between eastern strongman Khalifa Haftar’s self-styled Libyan National Army and forces loyal to the internationally recognised government in Tripoli according to the United Nations.

Nevertheless, with Haftar showing no sign of complying to international demands, the prospects for peace in Libya remain bleak. With the international community yet to devise an effective plan for resolving Libya’s conflict, Haftar and his forces remain free to pursue their own agenda without firm repercussions. In addition, as the likelihood of peace in the near future remains small, many Libyans see migration as their only option, thus increasing the pressure on European countries to devise policies for handling waves of refugees. So, as long as the international community does not take a united and firm stance against Haftar’s actions, Libya is likely to remain bogged down in a state of war and division.
