In September, the 5th Precinct was evacuated after a man brought a grenade into the building. The man, who said he found the grenade while cleaning an apartment, was ordered by officers to take the device outside, set it down, and walk away.

A man in November 2012 was cleaning his mother’s backyard and found a grenade police officials said pre-dated World War II. The man put the 80-plus year-old grenade, which contained TNT, into a flower pot, walked into the former Eastern District headquarters on Gratiot and reportedly told officers, “look what I found.” The DPD Bomb Squad and Homeland Security personnel took the device to Belle Isle, where it was safely detonated.

In May 2011 two women came to the Eastern District with three grenades in a Bed, Bath & Beyond shopping bag. After that incident, the precinct taped a sign to its doors that read: “NO WEAPONS ALLOWED OF ANY KIND, (including Hand Grenades).”

Majewski said she once found a grenade while helping a friend clean a basement in West Bloomfield Township.

“The cops came out and looked at it, and said it was safe,” she said. “And we had a souvenir.”
